“Some European leaders want to implement rules, which are not in line with the EU’s accession legislation. They have started to implement them only for Turkey,” Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in his interview with Russia Today, commenting on the prospects of Turkey’s membership to EU.
Erdogan also informed that Turkey does not lose hope. He mentioned that “regardless of whether you accept Turkey or not, we are already in the EU,” recalling about five million Turks living throughout Europe.
“There are countries already in the EU which cannot compete with Turkey in terms of freedom and economy. And therefore, such an approach is not sincere,” Premier stated.
However, incumbent EU President Herman Van Rompuy opposes Turkey’s membership to EU. The election of Van Rompuy aroused concern in Ankara, hence Turkey attempts to get guarantees that talks on joining EU will continue.
