The Republic of Nauru — smallest island nation in the world, recognized Abkhazia’s independence. Both countries’ FMs, Sergei Shamba and Kieren Keke signed agreement on establishment of diplomatic relations between the states on Dec. 15 in Sukhum, Interfax reports.

“The population of the country is insignificant, it’s a UN member and we sign the agreement in Abkhazia on diplomatic relations’ establishment for the first time,” Abkhazian President Sergei Bagapsh said at the signing ceremony. He pointed out that the process will have “smooth and serious continuation.”

Thus, Nauru is the fourth country after Russia, Venezuela and Nicaragua that recognizes country’s independence.

Meanwhile, the recognition of Abkhazia’s and South Ossetia’s independence is estimated at over U.S. $50m, “Kommersant” daily informs. According to the paper, the aid is asked by Nauru from Russia.

Today, 14-thousand populated Nauru Republic recognized the independence of Abkhazia.
