Russia is not going to reconsider its decision to grant political asylum to former Syrian President Bashar Assad. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Georgy Borisenko stated this in an interview with RTVI, commenting on the question of whether the new Syrian authorities continue to demand Assad's extradition.
"Our Syrian colleagues are well aware that Russia has granted political asylum to Bashar Assad for humanitarian reasons. And the current authorities in Damascus understand that this Russian decision is unshakable," Borisenko said.
According to the Russian diplomat, Moscow's relations with the new Syrian leadership are developing quite positively. Borisenko noted that political dialogue between the two countries is actively developing, while their economic cooperation is still lagging behind.
Moscow hopes that after completing the assessment of the state of the Syrian economy, bilateral economic ties will also begin to strengthen under the new leadership of Syria.
