In the complex situation, that Armenia is currently in, alternative to searching the optimal balance between the basic centre of power hardly exists, as Russian Strategic Culture Foundation expert Andrey Areshev said to NEWS.am, commenting on disagreements, not directly connected with Armenia, but emerged in NATO CSTO structure in the light of convergence prospects of the two.

According to him, the main problem of Armenian national security is “reopening” of Karabakh conflict. He indicated, that de-facto the conflict can no longer be considered “frozen”, as the dynamics of cease-fire violation on the parties' contact line testifies.

“It is absolutely evident that the collective forces of operative reaction of CSTO will not defend Armenia in case if something happens. It has been repeatedly stated on the official level as well”, said Areshev. Nevertheless, it does not mean that Yerevan has to shut down its cooperation in the CSTO framework, this has never been and will not be discussed despite the talk that after the possible improvement of Armenian-Turkish relations the need for Russian military base in Gyumri will fall off.

To note, an agreement of rapid military reaction forces of CSTO was signed on June 14, to which Belarus and Uzbekistan refused to join. The reason Belarus indicated for refusal to sign the agreement of the regional structure on security was the problem of bilateral relations with Russia. However, the possibility of Uzbekistan accession to the agreement is in the process of consideration.
