On July 29, 2009 at 12:05 a.m. local time after the pouring rain on the 2nd km of Spitak-Gyumri highway tunnel stones fell on the high-voltage transmission tower that sloped on the railway. At 2:35 a.m. Batumi-Yerevan train collided with the tower. No dead or injured were reported.
Armenian Rescuers informed the train wagons were taken to Gyumri by another electric locomotive. As a result of emergency recovery, the train operation was restored.
