The United States is supportive of the South Corridor designed for transporting natural gas from the Caspian region to Europe, Daniel Stein, Senior Advisor to the U.S. State Department on Eurasian Energy Affairs, stated at the first international gas congress in Ashkhabad, Turkmenistan.

The corridor may involve Nabucco and Italy-Turkey-Greece joint. Both are strategically important for diversifying gas supply sources and opening new ways of supplying gas to Europe, Stein said.

According to him, the South Corridor might be of commercial benefit to the Caucasus and Central Asia and serve as a basis for long-term mutually beneficial partnership with Europe.

The South Corridor is of the priority energy projects for the European Union (EU) supposed to diversify energy supply sources thereby enhancing Europe’s energy security.
