The journalist of the Haykakan Zhamanak (Armenian Times) newspaper Ani Gevorgyan was arrested on May 31. Along with other journalists and active members of the Armenian National Congress (ANC) she was brought to the police department of the Kentron (Center0 community in Yerevan.
Police also arrested 17 people in Republic Square. Policemen, using violence, brought the leader of the Hchakyan Party Lyudmila Sargsyan, the journalists of the Haykakan Zhamanak Suzanna Poghosyan and Ani Gevorgyan, as well as the reporter for the “Hayk” newspaper Lilit Tadevosyan, to the police department.
On May 31 evening, the policeman Hambartsum Boksyan wrote a report, claiming that at 8:00 p.m., May 31, in Republic Square, Ani Gevorgyan assaulted him and hit him in the face. On the basis of the report, the woman was charged with using violence against a public agent.
Other detainees were released. The fate of two of them, Sargis Gevorogyan and David Kiramijyan, remains unknown. Sargis Gevorogyan is brother of Ani Gevorgyan.
