The EU Resolution on South Caucasus contains provisions that are most dangerous for Armenia, which Yerevan does not speak of. They are the proposal for the establishment of the Black Sea Union, and the initiative to replace France in the OSCE Minsk Group with the EU, the Head of the ARF Dashnaktsutyun faction Vahan Hovhannisyan told journalists on June 1.

According to him, the initiative is fraught with the rotation of the Co-Chairs, representing other EU member-countries, namely, Great Britain, Czech Republic, Germany and Bulgaria. “We are all well aware of what the co-chairmanship of these countries in OSCE Minsk Group would mean. Besides, this initiative may engender another, not less dangerous one, for instance the replacement of Russia in OSCE MG by one of the other CIS states, for example Kazakhstan, which already stated its interest in the Karabakh conflict,” Hovhannisyan said. What is especially dangerous is the fact that, besides Azerbaijan, the European Parliament also calls the OSCE MG’s powers in question.

As for the proposal to establish a Black Sea Union, Hovhannisyan said that Russia and Turkey will certainly play the first fiddle. “Russia in tandem with Turkey - what it means to the Armenian nation, we already know from history. Thus the establishment of such a union also conflicts with Armenia’s interests. We can hardly bear our membership in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation. I think even this membership cannot be justified,” he said. It is the EU’s desire to get rid of Turkey that accounts for its interest in such a union.

By establishing a new agency, the EU tries to distract Ankara from the idea of joining the EU and create a new platform for Russia and Turkey, Hovhannisyan said.

He stated that the EU resolution is very dangerous for Yerevan, as it is another international document against Armenia in Turkish-Azerbaijani files. “Ankara and Baku are compiling a single file from all anti-Armenian international documents to present Armenia as an aggressor to the international community,” the MP said. He added that the author of the resolution Evgeni Kirilov carried out an order “for a certain fee”. “However, the point is why earlier ‘Kirilovs’ had no such orders. The answer is a clear one - Yerevan’s conduct did not allow them to. Now, however, the Armenian authorities are carrying out a policy which can only provoke international pressure on the country,” Hovhannisyan said.  He pointed out that, in preparing his report, Kirilov acted as a Bulgarian rather than as a European MP.

With all the threats considered, Vahan Hovhannisyan called on official Yerevan to spare no effort to prevent implementation of the EU resolution. He also urges official Yerevan to change its foreign political strategy and withdraw its signature from the Armenian-Turkish Protocols to prevent similar resolutions in future. “I cannot understand how, after getting a slap from Ankara, Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian, speaking on behalf of Yerevan in Canada, restated Armenia’s readiness to establish relations with Turkey without preconditions,” Hovhannisyan said.

He also called on the authorities to listen to the Opposition, as their ignoring alternative opinions leads the country to a deadlock. “International pressure on Armenia will continue until justice restored,” Hovhannisyan concluded.
