Joel Simon, executive director of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) stated they are deeply skeptical of the police allegations against journalist Ani Gevorgyan.

“The Committee to Protect Journalists is very concerned that Armenian authorities are detaining Ani Gevorgyan, a journalist for the pro-opposition daily Haykakan Zhamanak,” reads the statement by CPJ.

May 31, Armenian police clashed with the protesters and detained 17 people, including Ani Gevorgyan. Two out of three journalists were released but Gevorgyan remained in custody.

“Based on the video and accounts provided by her editor, we’re deeply skeptical of the police allegations against Ani Gevorgyan. The evidence indicates that she was at the rally doing her job. We join with our Armenian colleagues in calling for Gevorgyan’s release,” said Joel Simon.
