The European Union (EU) must do much more in the South Caucasus than it has ever done, as the two other international agencies that had the mandate to deal with the local conflicts do not have it any more, stated Special Representative of the U.S. Secretary General Dieter Boden.
According to him, the EU will actually play a key role in the South Caucasus. What should be in question is the initiatives that would serve as a basis for dealing with the status of disputed territories. Among the preparatory steps are possible assistance to civil society, work with young people and mass media, which are a most important instrument in the region, he said.
According to the German diplomat, the South Caucasus is chiefly skeptical about Europe now.
Specifically, Armenia and Azerbaijan do not want the EU to be involved in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process. However, the EU plays its role in many other fields in the South Caucasus, Dieter Boden said as quoted by Nemetskaya Volna.
