Kars-Baku-Akhalkalaki railway construction is suspended for technical reasons, Minister of Economic Development of Georgia Lasha Zhvania stated. Minister informed that the construction is suspended due to the rugged topography and the experts had to make certain changes in the project.
Earlier Azerbaijan and Turkey charged Georgia for suspending the construction. In 2008 Turkey, Georgia and Armenia signed an agreement on railway construction projected to be completed by 2011.
Kars-Baku-Akhalkalaki railway is an anti-Armenian project. From economic viewpoint, Georgia will gain more from reopening the railway passing through Armenia, however on demand of Azerbaijan and Turkey, the construction left out Armenia of participation in regular regional project.
