Iran has always adopted a balanced stance on the Karabakh peace process, Heritage parliamentary faction MP Armen Martirosyan stated, commenting on the recent statement by Iranian Vice President for Parliamentary Affairs Seyyed Mohammad-Reza Mir-Tajeddini. At the international conference “Republic of Azerbaijan: Past Experiences and Future Prospects” the Iranian official said that Iran initially supported and will continue to support Azerbaijan in the Karabakh issue.

Martirosyan did not rule out the possibility that the statement was made spontaneously.

“After all it should be remembered Azerbaijan intends to purchase S-300 defense systems from Russia. Obviously, these systems will not be used against Armenia as the latter does not intend to attack Azerbaijan.  Baku will use missile systems against Tehran over the aggravation of the situation regarding Iran’s nuclear program. Tehran should not underestimate this factor,” the parliamentarian stressed.
