“It is hard to say whether Armenian-Turkish border will open till October 14. Regardless of the timing, it is crucial for the countries to initiate relations’ normalization process,” Miroslav Ivanovic, the expert of Belgrade Institute for Criminological and Sociological Research told NEWS.am.

He supposes Genocide is a topical issue that burdened Armenian-Turkish relations, both nations. Therefore, to place a matter in historians and experts’ hands is just an opportunity to settle the problem as both countries’ official approaches on the issue differ dramatically. “As is known, in Turkey holding one’s own over the fact of Armenian Genocide in public is prohibited. Turkey’s consent to repose the issue in historians and experts’ hands is a step forward and undoubtedly, success of Armenian diplomacy. The matter is whether Turkey admits the decision of experts if will be advantageous for Armenian side. In any case will lose nothing despite the commission’s conclusion,” he stated.

Ivanovic positively esteems the steps stipulated by the Protocols. “Border opening is of Armenia’s benefit, taking into account the considerable number of Armenian residents in Turkey. They contribute to cultural and economic life of Turkey to date. Commerce, economic relations, ties with Armenian Diaspora are advantageous for Armenian state and people,” Ivanovic added. He considers border opening would be a sign for Azerbaijan to take more flexible position on mutual problems.
