YEREVAN. – Joint actions in Syria are not envisioned in the operational plans of the military divisions of the armed forces of Armenia and Russia.

Armenian Defense Minister Vigen Sargsyan on Thursday stated the aforesaid at a press conference, and when asked whether the 102nd Russian Military Base in Gyumri will be made use of in the fight against ISIS in Syria.

In his words, Yerevan and Moscow are not discussing this matter.

“We are actively cooperating in sending humanitarian assistance to Syria,” noted Sargsyan. “Naturally, it needs to be taken into account that there is a large Armenian community in Syria as well as in several [other] countries of the Middle East.

“Naturally, there are many problems, directions, including related to ensuring the safety of the Armenian communities; and the authorities of Armenia always take this factor into account.”
