War is too serious a thing to consider lightly. Despite Azerbaijan’s constant belligerent statements, there are, of course, people, who can make a sober assessment of the military balance in the conflict zone, and the possible responses of external players and influential world powers in the event of outbreak of hostilities, as well as understand the consequences triggered by the price of war. The deputy director of Caucasus Institute Sergey Minasyan told reporters during an interview.
“After all, lunching military operations and failing to win in a short time, Azerbaijan not only will lose hope to ever return Karabakh, but will also loose a much larger area around it. It will be the end for the current regime as well. In case of unsuccessful military actions and massive human and material losses, Ilham Aliyev will only repeat the fate of all previous leaders of Azerbaijan, who lost their posts as a result of similar defeats in Karabakh,”he said.
Minasyan stressed that no serious military expert predicts quick and bloodless victory by Azerbaijan in case of resumption of hostilities. More likely, everything will be vice versa. That is why military actions are not likely in the near future, unless Azerbaijan loses touch with reality and dares to such a suicidal step.
“If large-scale hostilities begin, not only Karabakh forces will not be limited in any offensive or rather - counter-offensive operations, but also of inflicting massive missile and artillery strikes on the most important industrial, strategic and other vital infrastructure in Azerbaijan. Precisely this awareness, of the possibility of such “counter-offensive strikes” by Armenian forces has no less a deterrent effect for the non-resumption of hostilities by Azerbaijan than the measuring military-technical balance in the line of contact between conflicting parties”, - he said.
