YEREVAN. – The ruling Republican Party of Armenia has all the chances to form a new government, said Eduard Sharmazanov, RPA spokesperson and National Assembly Vice President, during a briefing at the party headquarters.

In his words, one can draw such conclusions from the preliminary results of Sunday’s National Assembly election.

Speaking about the possibility of forming a coalition government with other political parties and blocs, Sharmazanov noted that, first, we need to wait for final election results and see which political forces have been elected to Parliament. He noted, however, that forming a coalition had never been an end in itself for the RPA.

In his words, transparent elections were managed to be conducted in Armenia based on the new Electoral Code, and regardless of how many political forces win seats in the National Assembly, there is no need to doubt that Armenia is moving towards democracy.

“Democratic development [in the country] is irreversible,” added Eduard Sharmazanov.

Armenia held a parliamentary election on Sunday, during which five political parties and four blocs ran for parliament. Political parties have to get 5 percent of votes, whereas the blocs need 7 percent to be elected to the National Assembly of Armenia.

According to the most recent preliminary results, the Republican Party of Armenia is in the lead with 49.06 percent of votes tallied.
