Full-scale work at the city dump in the Nubarashen neighborhood in Yerevan is to “end in a biogas producing plant.” On its official website the Yerevan Municipality reports that the Shimidzu Corporation (Japan) is carrying out the work.

The 16 hectares full of refuse were covered up with a layer of soil before. The project enables to resolve economic, ecological and health problems in Yerevan.

“The asphalt works are coming to an end, well boring and pipe laying work is under way,” said Gagik Khachatryan, Head of the Community Facilities Department, Yerevan Municipality.

Abe Yoshion, Chief Specialist of Shimidzu Corporation, reported that the refuse layer has been leveled and covered with a 25-centimeter soil layer. The wells have been bored.

Half of the work is completed. The program is of high importance for the city. The stench of decaying refuse will not any longer bother the residents, he said.

The biogas will be piped to the gas pump and, through gas injection wells, to the combustion chamber. The biogas (methane) will turn into CO. The Japanese corporation invested US $5.5mln in total into the project.
