Algeria cannot hold a presidential election planned for July 4 due to a lack of valid candidates, its constitutional council said on Sunday, prolonging the country’s transition after President Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned two months ago, France 24 reported.

Deadline for the nomination and registration of candidates for the post of President of Algeria was May 26, but no candidate has been registered.

President Bouteflika stepped down on April 2.
