UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has promised to increase the number of prison facilities by 10,000 places, BBC News reported.

He is also expected to expand the powers of law enforcement agencies in the fight against the underworld

Johnson said in an interview to Mail that new prison facilities will appear amid the construction of both new prisons and the expansion of existing ones. The government intends to spend 2.5 billion pounds on this project.

The Finance Ministry has already approved the allocation of funding.

Boris Johnson also intends to toughen the punishment for committing serious crime as of sexual nature and crimes committed with particular cruelty.

During the last month, the government pledged to recruit 20,000 police officers, practically making up for losses in the ranks of the police since the conservatives came to power.
