At a special invitation of the French government and the Council of Europe, Armenia’s Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan on Thursday delivered a speech during the session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

The session is devoted to the activities of the human rights institutions of countries and human rights defenders in the modern world, the challenges facing them and the paths to overcome those challenges.

In his speech, Arman Tatoyan presented the activities and shared the experience of the Human Rights Defender of Armenia and introduced the methods and principles of the Ombudsman’s work.

The Ombudsman talked about how he works with civil society and state bodies and attached importance to the fact that there is strong cooperation between the Parliament and the Human Rights Defender in Armenia, bringing up the example of the development of laws on the penitentiary institution and the adoption by the parliament and ratification by the President.

“The Human Rights Defender of Armenia also works actively with international human rights organizations. The European Court of Human Rights acknowledges reports of the Human Rights Defender as a major source, and there are links to those sources in the rulings related to Armenia. Armenia successfully continues to submit to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe the special positions of the Human Rights Defender in regard to implementation of the verdicts of the ECHR,” Armenia’s Ombudsman said in his speech.
