“My visit in advance of the Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents’ meeting is not accidental,” Peter Semneby, EU Special Representative for South Caucasus told journalists September 30 after the meeting with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.

“Coincidence of my visit with forthcoming meeting of the two Presidents is no mere chance, as Azerbaijani-Armenian relations and Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement are in the spotlight. We welcome the efforts of OSCE MG in this regard, considering however that EU could also contribute to this issue,” Semneby added.

EU Special Representative also commented on the recent developments in Armenia-Turkey reconciliation, emphasizing that formally “there is a direct relation” between the Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia-Turkey issues. However, we cannot neglect that there is bilateral influence. We are confident, the breakthrough in Armenian-Turkish relations creates favorable conditions for the resolution of other regional issues. This will assist the opening of communications in the region, as well as the momentum in Nagorno-Karabakh issue."
