Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili reckons the assault on Tskhinvali – the capital of South Ossetia was justified. In the interview with BBC he said the city was transformed into a military camp. He said that Russian Army was first to occupy the city and was firing at Georgian positions. According to him, Tskhinvali was almost empty, thus Georgian Army attacked military targets, and it is not true that Georgia made disproportionate use of force. “Our power was extremely small,” he pointed out.

Saakashvili deems there is no need that the crimes that Georgian Army could have committed in S. Ossetia be investigated internationally; underlining that Georgia has made all necessary investigations itself.

As NEWS.am informed September 30, EU Commission headed by Swiss diplomat Heidi Tagliavini, reported that attack on Tskhinvali on the night of August 7-8, 2008 was not justified from the point of international law. Besides, the Georgian version that Russia was the invader was denied.
