Typhoon Melor approached South Kuril Islands. According to the Russian forecasters, the storm may cover southern part of Sakhalin on Oct 9. Presently, typhoon rages with the speed of 35 meters per hour in Shikotan Island. The heavy storm brought torrential rains and high waves of 6 meters.

More than 20 deck hand-liners sheltered in the bays, Mayak radio reports. Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations does not rule out the state of emergency in the Kuril and South-Kuril regions on October 8-10, 2009.
