October 14, 2009 Baku and Moscow signed a contract on Azerbaijani gas supply to Russia the day when RA President Serzh Sargsyan is in Turkey. State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) and Russian Gazprom signed a midterm contract in Baku. Chairman of the Russian energy company Gazprom Alexei Miller and the President of SOCAR Rovang Abdullayev set their names to the document.

The document with principal provisions of Azerbaijani natural gas sale-and purchase contract was signed in the course of the RF president Dmitry Medvedev visit to Baku. Gazprom opened the talks on possible Azerbaijani gas purchase since 2008, however the negotiations started in March.

It is worth mentioning Turkey is the main transit-route for Azerbaijan. However, in the light of Armenia-Turkey reconciliation, Azerbaijani side shows Ankara possible risks, particularly in reorientation of the energy policy.
