The international community has not so far shown due respect for the Nagorno-Karabakh people’s rights, says a letter addressed to the CE Parliamentary Assembly and PACE President Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu by Zaruhi Postanjyan, a member of the Heritage parliamentary faction and of the Armenian delegation to PACE. In her letter, the Armenian MP points out that, PACE declined NKR Parliament Speaker Ashot Ghulyan’s invitation to monitor the elections to be held in the country on May 23. On the other hand, PACE plans to implement Resolution #1416, which provides for a subcommittee on Nagorno-Karabakh. It is obvious that PACE, showing unwillingness to monitor the parliamentary elections in Nagorno-Karabakh, but seeking to implement Resolution #1416, is not actually supporting human rights protection in the region. PACE’s behavior is not acceptable to the NKR people. Moreover, it is unacceptable that Armenia and Azerbaijan, which, according to PACE standards, are not democratic states, be involved in the subcommittee on Nagorno-Karabakh without the NKR authorities. It is also unacceptable that a representative of an undemocratic country chairing PACE is seeking the post of subcommittee chairman, the letter says.

There is no alternative to the international recognition of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR), which gained independence in conformity with the fundamental principle of people’s right to self-determination.
