Azeri FM urges Armenia accept mMadrid Principles
If Armenia accepts the updated Madrid principles, it will open ample opportunities for new stages, stated Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, Trend agency reports.
“If the OSCE MG Co-Chairs make Armenia accept the updated Madrid principles, it will open ample opportunities. We are waiting for a response from the Armenian President and Foreign Minister, but they will not say either ‘yes’ or ‘no’,” Mammadyarov said on May 24.
According to Mammadyarov, he will meet the mediators in early June.
The Madrid Principles, fundamental principles of a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, were presented to the Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents by OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs in November 2007.
According to document, Nagorno-Karabakh’s status is to be determined by free expression of popular will. The Principles also guarantee land communication between Armenia and Artsakh, as well as security.
In January 2010, the OSCE MG Co-Chairs presented the updated Madrid Principles to the sides.
