YEREVAN.- Supporting Azerbaijan’s candidature on non-permanent membership in the UN will not improve the reputation of the UN Security Council, said Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian.

During a joint press conference with EU Special Representative for South Caucasus Philippe Lefort, Armenian FM commented on introducing of Azerbaijan’s candidacy for non-permanent membership in 2012-2013. The Minister stressed that Security Council’s main task is to establish and strengthen peace.

“It turns out that a country known for its militaristic policy and war propaganda, a country proud of the fact that it has increased its military budget 20 times over several years can become a supporter of peace and claim for a position of non-permanent Security Council member,” Nalbandian said.  

Azerbaijan claims that can fulfill this role better than the EU members Hungary and Slovenia which also claim for being a non-permanent member.

“Many questions arise but one thing is clear: this will not improve the reputation of the UN Security Council,” the Minister concluded.
