U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan refused to comment on the statement by Uruguay’s FM Luis Almagro regarding intention to recognize Nagorno-Karabakh.

Such statements refer to bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Uruguay, spokesman for the Embassy Kit Bin told 1news.az.

U.S. consider that principles of the Helsinki final act ensure the basis for peaceful and fair resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, he added. U.S., being a co-chairing state of the OSCE Minsk Group, is ready to assist the sides in achieving fair resolution of the conflict based on these principles, Bin said.

As Armenian News-NEWS.am reported earlier, Uruguay’s FM stated that Nagorno-Karabakh should be independent or be united to Armenia in time, as that could be the only way to resolve the issue.

Uruguay was also the first state in the world to recognize the Armenian Genocide implemented by the Turks in 1915.
