The number of potential parents in Armenia has decreased by 50 to 60 thousand, which will lead to a decrease in the birth rate in the country. Armenia's deputy minister of labor and social affairs, Davit Khachatryan, stated this during a discussion Thursday.

He informed that many people in Armenia tend to have a third child, unlike many European countries, where people do not want to have more than two children, but because of social problems, they do not take that step in Armenia.

Khachatryan assured that the Armenian state will seek to resolve this problem so that families in Armenia can have the maximum number of children.

He noted that birth rates are falling not only in Armenia, but throughout the world, adding that these rates in neighboring Georgia and Azerbaijan are approximately the same as in Armenia.

The deputy minister noted that the average age of women in Armenia at the birth of their first child is 28.6 years.

Also, he reflected on the work of developing Armenia’s demographic strategy until 2040. According to him, taking into account the post-war situation in the country, as well as the demographic indicators of the last period, the need to create a new strategy for Armenia has emerged.

Davit Khachatryan noted that this document was developed in cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which proposed to form a consultative team for the implementation of this work.

"The best local and international experts were included in the working group. The strategy is based on 1897 data collected in Armenia. The document takes into account as well the 2023 events in Nagorno-Karabakh," the Armenian official noted.

Khachatryan emphasized that the aforesaid strategy is based on the concept of a balanced and stable population structure aimed at long-term human capital development and improving the quality of life.

"The first strategic goal refers to the creation of an environment that will promote family well-being, where the birth of each child will contribute to the development of human capital. The next goals are related to the reduction of the risk of mortality and the formation of a healthy environment, the provision of conditions for an active, dignified old age, the reduction of the motivation leading to emigration, and the formation of competitive human capital," said Armenia's deputy minister of labor and social affairs.
