PARIS. – Denial of the Genocide is unacceptable in the territory of France. Otherwise the state agree with those who make such statements, French Socialist Party MP Patrice Calmejane said during the Thursday discussion of the bill penalizing denial of the Armenian Genocide

“I believe all will vote listening to our conscious. Personally I will vote for the bill. I hope the period will be one to establish peace in the world. Racism is not an opinion but a crime. Some are afraid that the bill will hinder researchers. However, it does not refer to either the rights or the lefts, it refers to human rights,” he stated.

In his turn Union for Popular Movement (UMP) MP Jean Bardet said he condemns all dictatorships and religion wars. He leaves historians to write the history and will not vote for the bill.

Another French MP Francois Bayrou considers the text of the draft bill unreasonable and dangerous.

“We recognized that the Genocide exists. However, the text differs. It supposes an imprisonment of those who will deny the Genocide. Many tell that it was something else and they teach it their children. I will vote against the bill,” he added.

France holds discussions on the bill penalizing denial of the Armenian Genocide at the Parliament on Thursday. In case the bill violation, a one year of imprisonment and a fine amounting to €45000 is intended.

To note, the bill was adopted by the committee on legal issues at the French Parliament on December 7.
