The California governor, Gavin Newsom, on Sunday evening formally requested that US President Donald Trump’s administration rescind the deployment of National Guard troops in Los Angeles.

“I have formally requested the Trump Administration rescind their unlawful deployment of troops in Los Angeles county and return them to my command. We didn’t have a problem until Trump got involved. This is a serious breach of state sovereignty — inflaming tensions while pulling resources from where they’re actually needed. Rescind the order. Return control to California,” Newsom wrote on Facebook.

Also, he posted a copy of an official letter from the California governor's office to US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. The letter slams Trump's decision to deploy the National Guard in Los Angeles, calling the order itself illegal, bypassing the California governor's office, and questioning the appropriateness of the reinforcement of forces amid protests in Los Angeles.

Protests against mass arrests of illegal immigrants have been ongoing in Los Angeles for the third day. Trump, bypassing the California governor, ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard members to combat the unrest. They began arriving in Los Angeles on Sunday morning.
