The leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) countries will not adopt a joint statement after their summit in Canada due to disagreements with US President Donald Trump over Ukraine and tariffs. Such a document is currently being prepared, Japanese government sources have said, The Mainichi daily reports.

The G7 has traditionally attached great importance to free international trade, but Trump's protectionist policies are causing concern among G7 members.

Another factor has been the US president’s “pro-Russian stance” on Ukraine. As a result, Canada, which chairs the G7 this year, and other G7 countries believe that a compromise cannot be reached.

Instead of a joint statement, it is planned to adopt several documents on separate topics; in particular on the creation of sustainable supply chains for rare metals and other important materials, as well as on artificial intelligence.

Some members of the Japanese government are concerned that the absence of a joint statement at the G7 summit will weaken the deterrent effect on Russia, China, and North Korea. However, a government source noted that “in recent years, the declarations have reached about 30 pages, and they are not read.” Instead, the important thing at the G7 summit is sincere exchanges and expanding of cooperation, the source said.
