YEREVAN. – Time will tell as to what will be achieved by the opposition bloc Armenian National Congress (ANC) transforming from a movement into a political party. National Assembly (NA) Deputy Speaker, ruling Republican Party Spokesperson Eduard Sharmazanov told this to news reporters on Thursday.

“The fact is that, today, ANC does not possess that influence which it had for years on end. They are attempting to save ANC by turning it into a party,” he said.

Also, Sharmazanov wished success to all political figures and forces in the political battle.

“I am interested in [the fact] that the political battle is waged along the lines of the battle of ideas. The First President [and ANC leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan] should be the main brand of the ANC party and, in this sense, I don’t think [the ANC] becoming a party will give much,” the NA vice chairman said.

As Armenian News-NEWS.am informed earlier, First President, opposition bloc Armenian National Congress leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan gave an interview to a daily, during which he stated that the Congress can no longer be maintained in the same format and structure as it was over the course of the past five years.

“I believe the time has come for the Congress to transform into a single party. I also wish to inform that the discussions with respect to implementing this idea are already underway within the framework of the [political] forces that have remained committed to the Congress,” Ter-Petrosyan had added.
