Thomas de Waal, a senior associate at the Washington-based Carnegie Endowment, specializing primarily in the South Caucasus region, has presented his new book entitled Armenians and Turks in the Shadow of Genocide.

The book launch was opened by Carnegie Endowment President Jessica Tuchman Mathews who, incidentally, is the great-granddaughter of Henry Morgenthau, the American ambassador to the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, the Voice of America reported.

Mathews stated that this book by de Waal is not a historical overview, and it explains how those events affect the Armenians and the Turks.

“I also call it Armenian Genocide. Genocide is a problematic word, and not the best-selected term. But I stand with those who call it ‘Armenian Genocide,’” Thomas de Waal noted, for his part.

In his words, even though the Armenians were not fully satisfied with the Turkish PM’s statement of condolence last year, it needs to be underscored that Turkey was saying such words for the first time.

“I also use the words ‘Armenian Genocide,’ yet I use it believing that this phrase has limitations in it,” the analyst added.
