YEREVAN. – The latest strain in Russian-Turkish relations will not directly impact the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) MP Artak Zakaryan, who is also Chairman of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Foreign Relations, noted the above-said at Wednesday’s respective discussion.
In his words, this can happen solely if Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev decides to try his people’s luck against the backdrop of a Russian-Turkish clash.
Zakaryan added that Turkey has always played a double game in the regional events.
“Reciprocal steps would be taken, which can be considered as a new challenge for the South Caucasus region,” the RPA deputy noted. “This will be a signal for a longer-term planning in Russia’s policy in the South Caucasus.”
On November 24, the Turkish air force shot down a Russian Su-24 attack aircraft/interdictor on the Turkish-Syrian border. The warplane was taking part in the antiterrorism operations in Syria. This incident has led to tension in Turkey-Russia relations.
