YEREVAN. - Yerevan Municipality is going to announce a tender for the construction of a power plant operating on biogas received from waste.

Deputy Mayor of Yerevan, Vahe Nikoyan, told the aforementioned to Armenian News – NEWS.am.

The construction of the power plant is part of the program on the modernization of the Nubarashen landfill, which serves the capital. In the new landfill – near the operating one – a fence and drainage system will be installed.  The consultant from the Czech Republic, who has been elected by the Mayor of Yerevan, has come to a conclusion that the waste in the landfill is enough to collect them for biogas and produce power. This proposal will be included in the package of proposals on the tender of the landfill’s operator.

It is planned to complete the tender package in near future, while the tender will itself be announced by late December or early January. Considering that the international contests last up to half a year, and the construction may last for over a year, the power plant may be ready by 2018, Nikoyan noted.

Biogas installment constructed by Japanese company Shimizu already operates in Nubarashen landfill. Of course, gas only burns there without producing power, but it was originally constructed with a capacity to be linked with a future generator.

The overall amount of the funding of Nubarashen landfill modernization program will constitute 24 mln euro, 8 mln out of which are the loans of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The remaining 8 mln has been contributed through a grant received from the investment policy instrument of European Neighborhood.
