YEREVAN. – The statement by US Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Samantha Power, and regarding the fact of Armenian Genocide denial, should be considered solely in the context of strained relations between the West and Turkey, turkologist Ruben Melkonyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

In his words, this statement by a US representative does not at all mean that Washington’s policy has changed regarding the Armenian Genocide issue.

“US position on Armenian Genocide issue remains unchanged for many years,” noted Melkonyan. “This is one of those cases when political thinking clashes with real interests.”

The turkologist added that the apparent example of this situation is the position by incumbent US President Barack Obama, who previously had pledged to recognize Armenian Genocide, but then he had to take back his words.

In her remarks, Samantha Power had stated that a phenomenon such as Armenian Genocide denial still exists.
