The Turkish newspaper Gunes portraited the German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the front page of its current edition. The portrait has the following mockery notes on it: a "dirty aunt" and “Frau Hitler”. The newspaper’s website writes, that portraying the German Chancellor Angela Merkel in that image rose negative reactions on the part of Germans and European publications.

Germany and Turkey found themselves in a diplomatic scandal, after Germany had cancelled Turkey’s political campaigns to be carried out within the framework of the campaign directed at promoting constitutional reforms.

The government of Erdogan has repeatedly criticized the European countries, comparing them with Nazis and fascists. The leaders of the EU countries qualified such comparisons as unacceptable.
