French politician, former minister of culture Audrey Azoulay has been elected Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The majority of the members of the Executive Council voted for Azoulay.

The decision will now be put forward for approval to UNESCO’s 195 members on November 10, Reuters reported.
