Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday stated that despite the criticisms, the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is a great accomplishment.

Putin said numbers show that the establishment of the EAEU was a right decision. For example, as per the Russian president, Russia’s GDP grew by 1.6 percent while the overall GDP of the EAEU member countries went up by 1.8 percent.

“Makeup of the circulation of commodities is changing for the better within the framework of the EAEU,” added Putin. “There are grounds to maintain that we [the EAEU member countries] are moving in the right direction. An action plan for years has been developed.

“I have proposed setting up joint customs checkpoints [between the EAEU member countries]; this does not violate the principles of sovereignty [of countries], but, rather, it makes the customs structure more transparent.”

The Eurasian Economic Union comprises Armenia, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.
