French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said Thursday that the man suspected of killing three people in Strasbourg Tuesday had been killed by police, Reuters reported.

He said three police officers had stumbled across a man they believed to be the suspect, Cherif Chekatt, in the street and went to arrest him. But he turned to fire on them and they shot and killed him.

Three people were killed and thirteen others—injured, after an unidentified gunman had started firing shots Tuesday evening nearby a Christmas fair at Place Kléber, the central square of Strasbourg.
