YEREVAN. – Such incidents are regularly recorded on the Armenian-Azerbaijani line of contact. Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Armenia, Artak Davtyan, on Saturday told this to reporters, speaking about the recent tension on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border.

He noted that over the past two days, the adversary’s shooting has dropped sharply, whereas no shots were fired at all at some sectors.

When asked what the Armenian side’s response is to these incidents, Davtyan responded: “Not less than equivalent.”

To the remark that such incidents were previously recorded on the Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh)-Azerbaijan line of contact, whereas recently—also at the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, Artak Davtyan responded: “The Artsakh side always makes statements, presents the situation in numbers. Such incidents are regularly recorded on the Armenian-Azerbaijani line of contact. It’s just that we haven’t had casualties and injuries in the last incidents, so there hasn’t been a ‘response,’ as such. Unfortunately, we had a casualty and a wounded [earlier], the response of which was, naturally, greater.”

The Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Armenia stressed that each side has its objectives and tasks on the line of contact.

“The line of contact is an organism, or a mechanism that is constantly functioning, ” he said. “Each side has its objectives, tasks, and they wish to strengthen their [military] positions, [but] not allowing the adversary to strengthen its positions.”

And when asked whether, in this case, they have used the operative link that is established with Azerbaijan, Davtyan responded positively.

“The operative link is used as needed,” he added. “Of course, we are contacting in each and every case when there is an increase in tension. In this particular case, the absence of shooting at this moment is a result of the operative link.”
