Members of the “For Artsakh” pan-national movement congratulate Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh Republic) on the 28th anniversary of its declaration of independence. Hero of Artsakh, former Secretary of the National Security Council of Artsakh, General Vitaly Balasanyan posted the congratulatory remark on his Facebook page.

The congratulatory message reads as follows:

“Dear compatriots,

We congratulate you on the 28th anniversary of the declaration of independence of the Republic of Artsakh, our cherished holiday.

In 1991, it was hard for Armenians in Artsakh, Armenia or the Diaspora to believe that Nagorno-Karabakh was going to declare its independence soon, on September 2.

Today, 28 years after that historic day, it is safe to say that the selected option was the right option. True, over the past 28 years, no country, even Armenia, has recognized Artsakh’s independence, but this doesn’t mean that the calculation was wrong. There are many obstacles on the path to independence, and it can take decades to take that path. However, if the people believe in the idea of independence, it will turn into reality someday.

On December 10, 1991, the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic held a referendum, and the absolute majority of the Armenians of Artsakh said “yes” to independence.

True, the movement for Artsakh began with the idea of Unification with Armenia, but the events somehow imposed us to make another choice that was, as we look back, can be referred to as the best choice. We fully hope there will be a day when Artsakh will be de jure recognized and will be reunified with Mother Armenia. The liberation of Artsakh is one of the most brilliant pages in the contemporary history of the Armenian people. Let’s cherish and maintain Artsakh. We will achieve our desired dream, and that is to shape a unified and powerful Armenia.”
