Spain has confirmed the first COVID-19 imported case.

Two people who arrived in Valencia from the US had coronavirus. This may be the first imported case in Spain after travel restrictions were introduced in mid-March, Reuters reported.

The imported cases almost disappeared after Spain closed its borders and imposed a strict quarantine on March 14, but the authorities will closely monitor any outbreak after the country reopens in July.

According to the Regional Health Councillor Ana Barcelo, the travelers had likely not complied with a mandatory two-week quarantine after arriving.

“They have not travelled directly to Valencia, but stopped at midpoint airports and we don’t know exactly the route they took, or if they finally travelled to Valencia by car or by plane”, she said.
