Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Armenia Arayik Harutyunyan today declared that there will be changes in regard to free distribution of textbooks to schools in the country.

To clarify, the minister explained that, in the past, there was a rough calculation. Based on the calculation, each school would receive 10% quota. Schools where there were more than 90% children from well-to-do families would also receive textbooks with that quota, and the villages in which the number of children from socially disadvantaged families exceeded 10%, were deprived of the opportunity to receive free textbooks.

“Now, the Ministry of Education, Science Culture and Sport and the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs will conduct a study and form a scale, not allocate 10% quota,” the minister said, adding that in some schools, 2% of schoolchildren will receive free textbooks, while in other schools, up to 40% of schoolchildren will receive them free-of-charge.
