The EU may block travelers from countries most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, including the US, CNN reported referring to its sources.

European countries are preparing to open their borders to foreign travelers. The European Commission is already consulting with EU member states in this regard.

When asked by CNN if the US was on a list of origin countries that might be banned from travel to Europe, an EU diplomat referred to the first point of a checklist published by the European Commission on what to consider when allowing travelers into Europe.

"The first point on the checklist asks whether the country can "be considered as being in a comparable or better epidemiological situation as the average in the EU+ area" with regard to number of new infections, trend of new infections and response in areas such as testing, surveillance, contact tracing, containment, treatment and reporting," CNN noted.

The US recorded the largest number of COVID-19 infections and deaths. According to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University, 2,346,937 cases were recorded in the US. The death toll is 121,224.
