The Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II called on Turkey to reconsider its decision to convert Hagia Sophia into a mosque, the press service of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin reported.

"Despite appeals from pan-Christian organizations and politicians, the Turkish government, disregarding the anxiety of millions of Christians, made a decision that violated the rights of its national religious minorities."

"The authorities did not take into account the fact that the Cathedral is included in the UNESCO list," the statement said. "The Cathedral has historical, cultural, religious, and political significance, and is a symbol of the tolerance and unity of mankind."
