The incumbent mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, a member of the Labour Party, has won the mayoral election in the UK capital for the second time, BBC reported.

Thus, the 51-year-old politician, who first became mayor of London in 2016, will continue to hold this office for another three years.

The mayor of London is usually elected for a four-year term. But Khan's previous term in office was extended in 2020 because of the cancelation of the mayoral election due to the coronavirus pandemic.

His main rival in this election was Conservative Party candidate Shaun Bailey, who came in second.

The mayoral election was held in two rounds. Under the current UK election system, in the event of a mayoral vote, residents can support two candidates at the same time, indicating their first and second choice. If none of the candidates receives 50 percent of the votes in the first round, the second round begins when the voters’ second choices are counted.
