Power struggles and intense mistrust lie at the core of the confrontation between Lebanese political leaders and the government-forming stalemate, said European Union's foreign ministry head, Josep Borrell.

“It is clear a fight for the distribution of power and I have to say there is also strong mistrust,” Josep Borrell told a group of reporters before leaving Beirut. “It is difficult to get an agreement between people that don’t trust each other.”

A power struggle has begun between Prime Minister-appointed Saad Hariri, who was appointed to the post in October, and President Michel Aoun and his son-in-law Gebran Bassil, who heads the largest bloc in parliament, on the other, AP reported.

The European Union foreign minister spent two days in Lebanon, where he met with political leaders, security officials, and the military.

He said that forming a government is urgent as this small country is on the brink of complete financial collapse.
