Leaders of the European Union intend to put pressure on Russia by introducing sanctions against the country's gold, Reuters reported, citing information from a knowledgeable source.

It is not yet clear whether the measures will affect imports of Russian gold to EU countries or deliveries of precious metals to Russia.

Restrictions that apply to gold reserves will be part of a new package of anti-Russian restrictive measures. Work on the document will begin this week during the summit of EU heads of state, which will be held on 23-24 June in Madrid.

The agency added that among the countries participating in the summit are those that insist on imposing new sanctions against Moscow and those that call for focusing on the implementation of previously announced measures.
